Day one for this task seems simple enough . . . outside the window. I am surrounded by windows though. Right now I am at work. I work at a radio station, and I’m in the studio as I type this. The studio is shaped like a rectangle and the two long sides of the studio are lined with windows.
The windows on the front side of the studio look out into our lobby. Cream colored walls with white floorboards, door- and window frames. The lobby is tiled with cream and brown ceramic tile. It’s a very neutral and bland space. There are a few splashes of color from the very worn, brick red, leather couch which may hold the history of the radio station.
The couch has been the place where countless numbers of new employees have filled out their new-hire paperwork, where prize winners have waited, where artists have sat while awaiting their time to play live on our radio station, where coworkers have sat and shared stories and jokes, where tears were cried after we lost a member of our radio station family, where naps have been taken and newspapers have been read, where staff meetings have been held, where phone bank operators have taken pledges for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital during our annual radiothons.
That couch is the silent heart and soul of this radio station as everything and everyone changes around it.
Despite everything I can see through the windows of the studio, it is the couch that is the life of the station station. People have spoken of replacing it, of bringing in something newer and more fashionable, yet the people leave and the couch remains.
Until next time . . .
